Our Programs

Here is a summary of some of the programs and activities you will find at North Shore Unitarian Church.

Sunday Services

Our Sunday services are held at 10:30 a.m. and last about an hour.  Featured speakers may be our Minister, members of the congregation or special guests. Programs for children are offered at the same time. These services are characterized by their variety; we suggest you try us on several occasions.

Children’s Program

Our Religious Education program for children is experiential and interactive. Its purpose is to expose children to Unitarian values and to encourage commitment to community, social justice, tolerance and respect for religious diversity. Through stories, arts and crafts, role-play, games and music, children learn about world religions, concepts of God and spirituality, social responsibility and cooperative decision-making.

Youth Program

Our Youth Group meets Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Activities include a mentoring program, monthly “coming of age” activities, “Our Whole Lives” (OWL) sexuality curriculum, trips and conferences.

Adult Religious Education

We offer evening, daytime and weekend courses for adults on: philosophy, ideas and values; world religions; spiritual growth; alternative theological views; Unitarian heritage; music, dance; art; and other courses that appeal to a wide variety of interests.

Music

The church has an active music program led by Music Director, Alison Nixon. The program offers numerous musical opportunities, including choirs and instrumental groups. The main adult choir, with approximately 40 members, offers a varied repertoire including folk, contemporary and classical music. The choirs welcome new members at various times during the year.

Social Responsibility

We have an active Social Responsibility Committee with a role of developing and nurturing a vibrant social responsibility awareness in our local Unitarian community. It is
committed to promoting peace and compassion, social justice and respect for the worth and dignity of all people and the environment through education, advocacy, fundraising and community service.

Rites of Passage

The church’s Minister and lay Chaplains conduct weddings, funerals and memorial services, and infant naming and dedication ceremonies. These may be held at the church of off-site. Enquiries are welcomed from those who are not Unitarians but who may be interested in our ways of marking life’s special occasions.
