Act in Service Sunday
In the 2010-11 church year, the creation of a new team of volunteers specifically working on
the volunteer and service life of our church was one of the results of our Mission Into Action
work. Today we will look at how spirituality, leadership and service are intimately related to
each other. We will also recognize volunteers for our church and present the newly-named Mary
Segal Act In Service Award for 2012.
Speaker: Rev. Stephen Atkinson

Big Difficult Words: Faith
Next in our series focused on better understanding religious words that might bewilder us is this
one on Faith. Is faith a word used only to refer to believing in something for which there is no
proof, or can it also have a place in a rational and realistic view of the world? Is this even an
either/or question?
Speaker: Rev. Stephen Atkinson
Co-ordinators: Dani Cooper and Vandy Savage
At the June 2011 AGM, the congregation voted to establish a ‘Task Force on Name’, to look at the possibility of changing the name of our community. The Task Force was charged with reporting back to the congregation by January 2012.
The Task Force wants your input into whether our name, ‘North Shore Unitarian Church’, should be changed, and if so, to what?
Please visit the online Blog at www.nsuc-name.ca, so that we can share some thoughts with you, but more importantly, so that we can hear from you!
Karen Armstrong Keynote Address at SFU
Karen Armstrong, a prolific author of books on religion, will deliver a keynote address at SFU Centre for Dialogue in March 2012. Anyone involved in a reading group formed to study Armstrong’s book Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life may receive an invitation to hear her presentation in person. Armstrong received a TED Prize to promote activities in support of her Charter for Compassion project.
A core group from NSUC has already purchased books and registered with the SFU Centre. We welcome all to our reading circles and will begin meeting in January. Check the January newsletter for details.
